In Singapore, the most effective way to travel around is by taxi.
Buses are usually for locals although visitors may find it very
convenient for getting around dense parts of the city.
Taxi: You can usually speak to the driver in any
of the four official languages on the island. Fares will run between
2.40 - 30.00 SGD (1.50 - 17.00 USD) depending on distance. Expect a
usual fare of about 5-7 SGD when travelling between downtown and
elsewhere, and a fee of about 15-20 SGD when travelling from Changi
airport. They do take most major credit cards, although drivers often
don't want to be bothered by this. Some drivers may be unwilling or
unable to make change for a 50 dollar bill.
Subway (MRT) and buses: Visitors may want to try
out the mass transit system in Singapore, which is quite modern. The
subway runs the length of Singapore (E-W) and also has one loop route
(N-S line). A newer line added in 2002 serves more recent residential
areas (N-E line). Of particular note is that you can reach the
airport directly from downtown using the MRT to save taxi fare. Bus
stands are usually sheltered and ones downtown often have a road index
that show which buses go to which roads. Unfortunately, most bus
stops do not have maps of the local area. Fare ranges from 0.65 to
more than 2 dollars, depending on distance. You can pay by coin, but
the most convenient form of payment is by EZ-Link.
To Raffles Hotel: By MRT: "City Hall" interchange
stop (on both N-S and E-W lines).
To Min's Home: You can tell a taxi driver to come
here by telling them to go to "Gillman Heights". If they are unsure
of where that is (probably a newer taxi driver), say "near Alexandra
Road and Depot Road". Buses that reach Gillman Heights include the
97, 963, 51, 61, 100, 166, 195, 197 and 274. Here's the complete
ground address.
